Description:Excerpt from Investigation of the Unauthorised Use of United States Passports, Vol. 1: Hearing Before the Committee on Un-American Activities, House of Representatives, Eighty-Fourth Congress, Second Session, May 23, 1956 During the committee's hearings on the use of American passports by Communist Party members and adherents Playwright Arthur Miller denied that in 1943 he had applied for membership in the Communist Party and that he had been assigned to the Stuyvesant Club of the Communist Party. At the time of the interrogation of Miller, the committee possessed information that he had been pro posed for membership in the Communist Party by Susan Warren [susan Warren Frank]. In the course of the interrogation the witness was shown a photo static copy of Miller's application for membership in the Communist Party bearing the Signature of Sue Warren [frank]. She invoked the fifth amendment with respect to this application, and to all other questions dealing with her Communist activities.
