Doyle receives a call from Lord Richard Hillman after the sudden death of his girlfriend Baroness Bedale or Susan Taylor to use her given name in an airplane crash on her way to the reopening party for Pennington Hall. Shortly after Richard has been told by the police of Susan's tragic death he receives a message from someone saying "you are next you bastard" Richard decides not to tell Sir Sam and Jake Winstanley his godchildren that night so as not to bring to an end the dinner and Ball that they and their Aunt Rose we're hosting. He would do it later after their guests had left. That night Rose had also announced her engagement to George Percival. Richard as he slowly recovers from the shock of the death of his girlfriend gets in touch with Detective Inspector Edwards of Scotland Yard who he had worked with to bring down the gang and advise him of the phone call he had received. He also called Mel Doyle and told him he needed to see him. The actions that takes place becomes a personal battle between Richard and the remaining London gang members. Mel Doyle becomes his enforcer as he seeks revenge for being cheated out of a future with Susan. Doyle wants Richard to have police protection but he refuses saying he does not trust anyone but Doyle. As events unfold if becomes clear that the people who are doing this are very well connected and have Judges, Police and even a Member of the British Parliament on their payroll. He also understood how ruthless this gang can be and knows they will come after anyone to carry out their threat. His daughter Natalie will not be safe and he has to find her and protect her and his ex wife. He travels to a seaside town where they are on holiday and is surprised to find that four thugs have followed him there. In a violent action he takes three of them out with the fourth one running away. He finds Kathy and Natalie in a guest house and arranges through his ex SAS boss to have them stay in a safe house. During the time they are their he and Kathy become reacquainted. In the meantime Mr Big finds out who had turned police informant and where he had been placed under police protection. A raid is organized to bring the police informer to him where he his savagely beaten and mutilated before they tell the police where they can find his body. Doyle and Richard with the help of the Police and SAS eventually track down who is doing this. The action involves kidnapping and murder and takes place in the Cotswolds, Wales, Hereford, North Yorkshire, the New Forest and London.
